seats and candidates by state

• The remaining 10 seats in the Upper House of Parliament—four in Karnataka, one in Himachal Pradesh, and one in Uttar Pradesh—are up for election. We anticipate results later on in the day.

• For the 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party has put forth three nominees, whereas the BJP has put forward eight. Even if they have enough votes to win seven seats without opposition, Sanjay Seth’s inclusion raises the prospect of a close race for one seat. In Karnataka, the Congress has booked hotel rooms for all of its MLAs ahead of the annual election to fill four seats. In Uttar Pradesh, a candidate needs about 37 first-preference votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat. Ajay Maken, Syed Naseer Hussain, and GC Chandrasekhar from the Congress, Narayana Bandage from the BJP, and Kupendra Reddy from the JD(S) are the five candidates running for these seats. All parties have sent whips to their MLAs, raising the possibility of cross-voting.

• In the meantime, the Congress has issued a whip ordering all of its MLAs in Himachal Pradesh to back Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the party’s nominee. The BJP has criticized this decision, claiming that lawmakers ought to be allowed to cast votes in accordance with their own views.
