World Water Day 2024: Background, Importance, and Subject

Millions of people still lack access to sufficient sanitary facilities and clean drinking water throughout the world.

On this World Water Day, we should once again pledge to preserve the water resources of our world for coming generations.

Following a recommendation made in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), the United Nations (UN) declared March 22 to be World Water Day in 1993.

Since then, it has been observed annually with a new subject. This day offers a chance to spread awareness of the importance of sanitary conditions, good hygiene, and clean water for everybody.

World Water Day 2024’s theme

This year’s subject is “Water for Peace,” as determined by the UN. The UN stated on its website that tensions between communities and nations can arise when water is scarce or contaminated, or when people have uneven or no access to it.

Water that flows over national boundaries is essential to over 3 billion people globally. However, agreements for collaboration covering all shared water are only in place for 24 countries.

There is an urgent need for nations to come together in support of preserving and safeguarding our most valuable resource as the effects of climate change become more pronounced and population increases.”

The UN stated that finding creative answers and working together are necessary to overcome these issues.

The world’s water crisis

  • Millions of people still lack access to sufficient sanitary facilities and clean drinking water throughout the world.
  • The worldwide water problem poses serious obstacles to food security, economic growth, and human health by intensifying poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation.
  • After analyzing the data of 350 corporations, the non-governmental organization Oxfam found that only 28% of the most powerful food and agriculture corporations globally say they are cutting back on their water withdrawals, and only 23% say they are taking steps to lessen water pollution.
  • Together, the 350 companies generate more than half of the global revenue from agriculture and food.

The significance of conserving water

In order to lessen the effects of climate change and guarantee water security for both the current and future generations, water conservation is essential.

To preserve this valuable resource, it is imperative to use water-saving technologies, encourage effective irrigation techniques, and put sustainable water management plans into action.
