South Africa vs Nepal Highlights: South Africa beat Nepal by 1 run

In an exciting match, Nepal was eliminated from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup while South Africa managed to stay undefeated.

In a thrilling one-run victory over the Asian team in St. Vincent on Friday, Heinrich Klaasen produced a run out off the very last delivery to help South Africa maintain their undefeated record at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and eliminate Nepal from contention for a position in the Super Eights.

In order to maintain their hopes of making it to the Super Eights, Nepal needed to win by two runs from the very last ball. Klaasen maintained his composure to run out Gulsan Jha at the non-strikers end, seemingly sending the game into a Super Over.

It was a sad way for Nepal to end the match, given they had been the superior team for most of the exciting match. Their spinners had dominated with the ball, taking South Africa to 115/7, and when they reached 85/2 in the 14th over and had the needed rate well within reach, their top order looked in control.

However, the Proteas’ fortunes were turned around by South Africa’s spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (4/19), while the team’s fast bowlers Anrich Nortje (1/27) and Ottneil Baartman (0/20) retained their composure to bowl the final two overs, preventing Nepal from winning an international match against an ICC member side.

Given that they played much of the Nepal match below their best, South Africa will need to step up in the upcoming tournament stages if they are to compete with the heavyweights.

Nepal’s spinners were dominant as the Proteas managed a score just over 100. Their only middle-order batsman, Reeza Hendricks (43), was the only player to spend any significant time in the middle, and their only hitter, Tristan Stubbs (27* off 18 balls), was the only one to finish with a strike rate above 100.

Up until Shamsi’s late burst left eight runs needed from the last over, Nepal’s chase looked well in control. Kushal Bhurtel (4/19) and Dipendra Singh Airee (3/21) shared seven wickets between them.

On the third ball of the last over, Gulsan reached the boundary, but Klaasen made the game-winning move at the end to give South Africa the victory.
