On Wednesday morning, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates visited a slum in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and spoke with the people living there with the help of state government representatives. In addition to visiting the residents of the Biju Adarsh Colony in the Maa Mangla Basti to see how they were doing, he also spoke with the women’s self-help groups (SHGs) that were operating there. A variety of state government entities collaborate with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The State Development Commissioner, Anu Garg, outlined the facilities offered to the slum inhabitants, including as electricity, tap water access, land rights, and sanitary facilities.
The State Urban Development Secretary, G Mathi Vathanan, made reference to Gates’ conversations with recipients of other government aid programs. One colony inmate revealed that Gates personally spoke with them, asking how the schemes affected their life.

The State Urban Development Secretary, G Mathi Vathanan, made reference to Gates’ conversations with recipients of other government aid programs. One colony inmate revealed that Gates personally spoke with them, asking how the schemes affected their life.
“He wanted to know about our previous living conditions and how they have changed since,” she said. Later in the day, Gates is scheduled to meet with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Bill Gates visiting Odisha
Before coming to Odisha, Bill Gates had made reference to it in his blog. He stated he would see India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in operation during my visit. “I’m going to take a visit of an agricultural monitoring center in Odisha, where DPI is used by government representatives to give farmers real-time advice.
This institution, which is independent of land ownership, keeps a database of 7.5 million farmers and their agricultural information because of Aadhaar.
This is made possible by a chatbot that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to give information in local languages, allowing officials to monitor agricultural activity and provide customized advise depending on particular needs,” he said.
Additionally, he spoke about the pest-management program linked to this service, claiming that it currently serves more than 4 million farmers.
India is significantly improving health: Bill Gates
Bill Gates noted in his blog that India has made a substantial contribution to world health, especially in the area of immunization. He underlined that India is the world’s leading vaccine manufacturer, providing more than 60% of the immunizations supplied by Gavi, an organization that has helped immunize over 1 billion children in low-income countries. According to him, Indian pharmaceutical companies have been in the forefront of the fight against diseases like
- HIV/AIDS and
- have produced high-quality,
- reasonably priced pharmaceuticals and
- vaccines.
They have also produced vaccines against rotavirus, pneumococcal pneumonia, and COVID-19.
Gates commended the Indian government for its efforts in providing vaccines to its own citizens as well as those of other low- and middle-income nations.
He views these initiatives as one of the most important developments in world health and attributes to India a major acceleration in the supply of novel medications and vaccines to developing countries.
