Earlier, Tanzim, Shoriful, and Taskin shared nine wickets apiece to limit Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka 255 (Liyanage 67, Mendis 59, Tanzim 3-44, Shoriful 3-51, Taskin 3-60) by six wickets with 257 for 4 (Shanto 122*, Mushfiqur 73*, Madushanka 2-44).
Bangladesh won the inaugural One Day International (ODI) in Chattogram by six wickets thanks to Najmul Hossain Shanto’s career-best unbeaten score of 122.
Sri Lanka was unable to respond. Despite losing three early wickets, the home team prevailed with 32 balls remaining after Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim combined for an uninterrupted 165 runs at the fifth wicket.
Shanto was well-supported by Mushfiqur, who scored his 49th half-century, which helped the Bangladesh captain dominate Sri Lanka.
The two were in excess of the required rate even though at one point they completed 60 deliveries without reaching a limit.
Shanto reached his second ODI century with a scorcher through the covers, having hammered most of his boundaries in front of the wicket.
In addition, he lofted Maheesh Theekshana over the cover region to score the game-winning run.
It was only the second occasion that Bangladesh’s fast bowlers have taken nine or more wickets in a home ODI.
Earlier, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Shoriful Islam, and Taskin Ahmed took three wickets apiece. After giving up a solid start by their openers, Sri Lanka’s half-centuries from Janith Liyanage and captain Kusal Mendis allowed them to reach 255.
But Sri Lanka used the fresh ball to fight back. When Litton Das inside-edged Dilshan Madushanka onto his stumps with the first delivery, he was sent back.

Madushanka’s second over ended with Soumya Sarkar falling when he top-edged a straightforward catch to Theekshana at square leg. After that, Pramod Madushan joined the fray, dismissing Bangladesh’s off-stump of Towhid Hridoy with a deft outswinger, bringing the score down to 23 for 3 in the sixth over.
An immediate comeback was achieved by Mahmudullah and Shanto in a fourth-wicket stand. In the ninth over, Mahmudullah attacked Madushanka, clubbing him twice through the covers before brushing him through point.
In the subsequent over, Mahmudullah hit his first six as well, after Shanto had earlier top-edged Lahiru Kumara.
However, Mahmudullah’s downfall was sudden. He miscued a hoick towards deep midwicket, where Madushanka made an outstanding catch with a full-length dive to his left, moments after he appeared to be experiencing cramps.
Sri Lanka may have thought they would get another chance at 92 for 4, but the dew did not aid them and they were unable to gain any more ground.
Shanto and Mushfiqur combined to hit six boundaries in their opening seven overs. Mushfiqur began with a square leg sweep, and Shanto then hit Madushan hard and hauled him quickly. Before long, Shanto scored fifty off fifty balls.
Shanto and Mushfiqur kept the scoreboard running even after they failed to draw any boundaries. In the thirty-third over, Mushfiqur reverse-swept Hasaranga before slog-sweeping him for consecutive fours, striking the boundary that broke the shackles.
In the 35th over, Shanto reached the partnership’s hundred with a swipe over midwicket, while Mushfiqur reached his half-century with a whip off the pads. Bangladesh quickly overcame the opposition, crossing the finish line in 44.4 overs.
Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando provided Sri Lanka a fantastic start in the afternoon, scoring 71 runs in 9.5 overs for the first wicket.
In Chattogram, the two hit ten fours and two sixes between them. Fernando expertly threaded the square off-side field, while Nissanka hit a couple of his fours over mid-off.
But Tanzim pulled back on Sri Lanka. In one over, he removed Nissanka and Fernando, and in the next, he added Sadeera Samarawickrama, marking his breakthrough.
As he got up to Fernando and Samarawickrama, Nissanka stopped an attempt to move ahead, and Sri Lanka fell from 71 for 1 to 84 for 3.
Mendis’s well-executed fifty helped to revive Sri Lanka’s innings. Liyanage proved to be an ally, hitting three fours and two sixes to reach the highest score of 67 off 69 balls.
After Mendis and Hasaranga fell in rapid succession, Liyanage ran out of partners.
Towards the end, Bangladesh’s pacers struck back, especially Taskin and Shoriful who refused to let the Sri Lankan hitters to relax.
Tanzim was injured for a spell, therefore he was unable to add to his first burst of three wickets.
The other wicket fell to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who hit the left-handed Charith Asalanka with a stunning offbreak.
