Has Diogo Dalot Been the Key Player for Manchester United?

Diogo Dalot has quietly become Manchester United’s most significant and improved player of the 23–24 season amongst the club’s turbulent and uneven performances from its players.

Dalot, who was signed by José Mourinho in 2018 for slightly over £18 million, has had a difficult time securing a starting position at right back.

He traveled to Milan and back, where he played a fantastic season for AC Milan and gained valuable knowledge from sporting director Paolo Maldini and head coach Stefano Pioli.

Dalot’s position on the team appeared unclear before the beginning of the season.

The Portuguese full-back looked relegated to a supporting role at best given Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s comeback at right back unless his defensive contribution significantly improved.

Although Dalot’s contribution in the latter part of the pitch has never been questioned, there have been numerous questions over the previous five years about his focus and spatial understanding when defending the goal.

Dalot has been caught off guard and appeared weak in one-on-one situations far too often in the past, but after his loan stint in Italy, he has changed as a player, showing significantly more awareness and confidence in his back post defense.

In terms of attacking, Dalot’s deft crosses and cutting passes from the wings have been crucial in breaking down rival defenses.

Although supporters would prefer to see him add more goals and assists to his total—five in 35 games this season—his production usually tempts the forwards to attack.

In the summer, Manchester United will have to decide on a right back. They must choose whether to trade Wan-Bissaka this summer and sign someone else to challenge Dalot, or the other way around, as his contract is about to expire.

The Portugal international committed to a new long-term deal last summer that will keep him committed until 2028.

Considering his level of play and the length of the deal, the Portugal international will undoubtedly cost more than Wan-Bissaka.

The former right defender for Crystal Palace had an excellent season last year, but has struggled with injuries this year.

His lack of involvement in the last third, despite his exceptional defensive skills, has been a persistent criticism.

Dalot has improved significantly over the last three seasons and is still only 24 years old.

To create some healthy competition, Manchester United ought to attempt to sign another right back this summer or next, but it appears that Dalot is starting to establish himself as the team’s first choice.
