  • With almost the same star-studded squad, but in a brand-new stadium, India kicks off their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign nearly six months after their devastating home loss to Australia in the ICC Cricket World Cup final.

At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday, the victors of the 2007 T20 World Cup take on a formidable Ireland team in their Group A opener.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, feels that it’s critical for his team to “stay in the present,” forget about how they’re going to finish the competition, and get over the disappointment of losing in the Ahmedabad final.

In his pre-match media conference on Tuesday, Rohit stated, “I think it’s important not to look too far ahead – just think about what we need to do tomorrow.”

Having played their pretournament warm-up match against Bangladesh at the same stadium, India is no stranger to the new arena. With eight wickets from their speed bowlers, India won the match by a score of sixty runs. Their commander emphasized that the situation is still “quite unknown.”

“I don’t know which wicket we will play on, and there is a square of four pitches, so a lot of things about the outfield and the pitch are very uncertain.”

The shortest format of the game has changed over the past 17 years, according to Rohit, who was a member of India’s team during their 2007 victory run.

“Players trying to do different things at different times and being brave are the reasons why the average score is a lot higher now than it was in 2007.”

Since their 2009 debut in the competition, India’s opponents in their opening match have also advanced significantly, and Rohit thinks India will need to perform at their very best to defeat them.

It will be as tough a game as we play against any other opponent since they [Ireland] play a lot of Twenty20 cricket and many of their players compete in leagues all over the world.

Heinrich Malan, the coach of Ireland, wants his squad to “play consistently good cricket” without regard to the significance of the game or their opponents.

“We have demonstrated over time that we are capable of playing a good brand of cricket, and if we continue to do so, we can defeat the elite teams.”

Malan anticipated that despite the likelihood that most of the supporters would be Indian, New York’s vibrant Irish minority would show out to cheer for their side.

Pitch and meteorological circumstances

The two games that were played in New York had different outcomes on what is currently the most talked-about field and stadium. On Monday, South Africa and Sri Lanka played a low-scoring match, while India’s warm-up match against Bangladesh was high-scoring.

Although the pitch did not appear to be of much use to the hitters, Rohit expressed optimism that his team’s expertise will be useful in managing the circumstances.

“We have several seasoned hitters who have competed in various environments outside of India. I hope they apply themselves, let their experience speak for itself, and make the most of it.

There’s a risk of rain in the evening and the weather is predicted to be hot and muggy.
