Anger among progressives over President Biden’s purported designation of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley’s killer as “an illegal” threatens to overshadow the otherwise highly praised State of the Union address.

Why this matters Biden expressed sorrow for using the statement on MSNBC, which infuriated Republicans who claimed it demonstrated how tone-deaf Democrats are on immigration.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) heckled Biden during his unscripted speech after she had earlier given him a Laken Riley pin with the words “Say Her Name.”

An undocumented individual. And it’s not ‘illegal.’ It’s ‘undocumented,'” Biden said on MSNBC when asked if he regretted using the word.

He and other Republicans are attempting to use the 22-year-old student’s passing as a metaphor for Biden’s border policies.

  • At his rally, Trump addressed a chorus of jeers, saying, “Joe Biden went on television and apologized for calling Laken’s murderer an illegal.”
  • “Biden should be apologizing for apologizing to this killer.”
  • “To every American, I promise to secure the border. The previous president promised, “I will put an end to the killing, the bloodshed, the suffering of our people, the looting of our cities, and the sacking of our towns.”

Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), who gave the Republican response to Vice President Biden’s State of the Union address, is currently facing intense criticism for attacking Biden’s border policy by utilizing the testimony of a victim of sex trafficking.

Karla Jacinto Romero, the victim, was really coerced into working in Mexican brothels under the Bush administration rather than being trafficked into the United States.

On “Fox News Sunday,” Britt defended the story, stating that although she never suggested the event happened under Biden’s administration, his border policies had made human trafficking more prevalent.
