President returns to his upbeat tone over the use of the atomic arsenal should the west challenge Moscow’s sovereignty.

As his army advances on the Ukrainian battlefield more than two years after its full-scale invasion, Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia is ready for nuclear war.

In an interview that aired on state television on Wednesday, the Russian president boasted that his nuclear forces were under “constant alert,” asserted that Russia had advanced beyond the US in creating a new generation of nuclear-capable missiles, and stated that testing may restart.

According to military-technical analysis, Putin stated, “We are, of course, prepared.”

“[The US is] creating its constituent parts. And we are, too. That does not, in my opinion, imply that they are ready to launch this nuclear conflict right now.

What can we do if such is the case? We’re ready. Putin, who is predicted to easily win this weekend’s elections and keep his 24-year rule in place until at least 2030, has gone back to threatening the world with nuclear weapons and expressing confidence that Russia is winning the war in Ukraine.

As stated in Russia’s nuclear doctrine, Putin emphasized that even though there had “never been the need” to deploy a tactical nuclear weapon, he might if there was a threat to the “existence of the Russian state” or “damage to our sovereignty and independence.”

Putin declared, “Weapons are there to be used.” According to leaked classified data seen by the Financial Times, the remarks highlight how Russia’s military has trained to potentially use tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield at extremely low thresholds in the early phases of a conflict, including against major world powers.

At Russia’s lowest point in Ukraine in the fall of 2022, when his forces made humiliating retreats in the eastern provinces of Kharkiv and Kherson, Putin further stated that he had not given tactical nuclear weapons any thought.

Subsequently, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France became so concerned about Putin’s potential actions that they sent a joint warning to Russia threatening to use conventional weapons in retaliation for any tactical nuclear strike in Ukraine.

During a visit to Moscow last year, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who has provided Russia with an economic lifeline against western sanctions and implicit support for the invasion, also cautioned Putin against using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Following the warnings, Putin stopped talking about tactical nuclear weapons and refrained from doing so for a few months.

Sources close to the Kremlin claim that he independently determined that Russia would not gain an advantage in scenarios resulting from the use of tactical nuclear weapons.

Rather, Russia withdrew from the New Start accord and deratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban treaty, actions that experts believe are intended to exert political pressure on Russia utilizing its nuclear arsenal without making direct threats to use them.

  • In reaction to a US nuclear test, Putin stated that Russia may start doing nuclear tests again. He added, “I’d have to give it some more thought, but I can’t rule out that we would do the same.”
  • “We are prepared at all times. These forces are constantly on guard; they are not your typical armed forces.
  • Since then, despite a critical US aid package to Kyiv being stuck in Congress, Russia has regained the initiative over Ukraine’s outgunned and outmanned army.

The Russian army captured the abandoned city of Avdiivka in February, marking its first notable triumph since the nearby city of Bakhmut was destroyed and taken in May of last year, also in the eastern Donetsk province.

“Not a single one of the objectives they set last year was accomplished by Ukraine.” And our armed forces now have total control over the initiative,” Putin stated. He seemed certain that Russia’s troops could make more progress and said he was not ready to talk about giving up any of the area that Russia has taken from Ukraine.

He declared, “We’re not ready for negotiations based on some [Kyiv] wishlist, but only on the realities that have come to pass on the ground.”

“We find it absurd that they are holding negotiations at this time simply because they are out of ammunition.”

Even though Putin insisted that a more direct military action by the West would “not change anything on the battlefield,” he also hinted that it would have “more significant geopolitical consequences,” cause Ukraine to lose more of its land, or even force him to use nuclear weapons.

Since French President Emmanuel Macron raised the possibility of sending soldiers to Ukraine in February, the US, Germany, and other European nations have rejected the proposal.

Putin remarked, “I don’t think everyone is foaming at the mouth” to send soldiers. But we’re ready.

I’ve stated it numerous times: for us, it’s a question of life and death; for them, it’s about strengthening their tactical position.
