Netflix releases the Indrani Mukerjea series after the Bombay High Court rejects the CBI’s appeal

 ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth,’ a documentary on the Sheena Bora murder, was released on Thursday following the denial of the CBI’s petition to prevent its streaming.

The Bombay High Court dismissed a CBI appeal opposing the documentary’s streaming on Thursday, allowing Netflix to air the series on the streaming service.

Indrani Mukerjea is on trial for the alleged death of her daughter Sheena Bora.

Originally slated to debut on Netflix on February 23, the documentary series titled ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth’ explores the disappearance of 25-year-old Bora.

The makers of the documentary were requested to postpone its distribution by the High Court following the CBI’s motion to the court, claiming the video could have an impact on the legal system. 

The court granted its release on Thursday while rejecting the CBI’s request for a stay of proceedings till the case’s trial was concluded.

In April of 2012, Bora was allegedly strangled to death in a car by Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, and her driver at the time, Shyamvar Rai.

Mukerjea’s previous relationship produced a daughter named Bora. Her corpse was set ablaze in a Raigad district forest in Maharashtra.

In 2015, the murder was made public as Rai disclosed the homicide after being detained in a different case. 

After being detained in August 2015, Mukerjea was given bail in May 2022. 

Rai Khanna, the other accused in the case, and Indrani’s ex-husband Peter Mukerjea are also out on bond.

According to the CBI, the documentary might change public opinion, which would then influence judges. 

The court did observe that it had also seen the series and that it had believed the CBI would not pursue its demand in opposition to the show.
