Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s new prime minister, is congratulated by PM Modi

In the face of protests, Shehbaz Sharif secured 201 votes in parliament on Sunday to win a second term as prime minister of Pakistan.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used X to congratulate Shehbaz Sharif, the newly elected prime minister of Pakistan who represents the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

PM Modi commented, “Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on taking office as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.”

In the face of protests, Shehbaz Sharif secured 201 votes in parliament on Sunday to win a second term as prime minister of Pakistan.

Along with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, his party, the PML-N, will form a coalition government.

Leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Sharif supported party loyalist Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for speaker of the national house and his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif for prime minister.

Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of Nawaz Sharif, was designated as the chief minister of Punjab province as part of the agreement forming the PML-N-PPP alliance.

On February 26, Maryam, Nawaz’s political heir, took the oath of office and became the nation’s first female chief minister of any province.

Asif Ali Zardari, the former president of Pakistan, was designated as the PPP’s senior leader and would hold the presidency, according to the other agreement.

Sharif’s party, the Nawaz PML-N, came in second in the February 8 elections.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan, backed independent candidates who won the most seats but were unable to secure a majority in parliament.
